Kolkata trams set for revival as West Bengal plans route expansion

Kolkata's iconic tram services could soon witness a revival as the West Bengal government plans to expand the city's historic tram network.

The proposal includes extending services from south Kolkata to Dakshineshwar, with engineering consultancy firm RITES set to conduct a survey for the project. Residents and tourists have welcomed the move, saying the pollution-free transport system deserves a comeback.

Known alongside the city's famous yellow taxis, Kolkata's trams offer a slower journey, allowing commuters and visitors to experience the sights and sounds of the bustling metropolis.

Electrified in 1902, the tram service has long been recognised as an environmentally friendly mode of transport.

Although tram operations were reduced to only a few routes in recent years, the proposed revival has generated optimism.
