Kerala Polls 2026: G Sudhakaran’s independent bid turns Ambalapuzha into high-stakes battle
Ambalapuzha Assembly constituency in Kerala’s Alappuzha district is witnessing an unusual and closely watched political battle this election season, breaking away from its long-standing predictability.
A stronghold of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) since 2006, the constituency has been pushed into a phase of political churn following internal dissent within the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM]. Veteran leader G Sudhakaran, a three-term MLA, has entered the fray as an independent candidate, setting up a direct contest against his former party.
Sudhakaran is banking on his development record, asserting that his commitment to the people of Ambalapuzha goes beyond party lines. His candidacy has received a significant boost from the United Democratic Front (UDF), which has chosen not to field a candidate and is instead extending support to him, expressing confidence in his chances of victory.

On the other side is sitting MLA H Salam, the official LDF candidate, who is focusing on a development-driven campaign while appealing to younger voters. Dismissing concerns over the UDF’s backing of Sudhakaran, Salam has expressed confidence that voters will remain loyal to the Left front’s ideological foundation.
Voter sentiment in the constituency appears mixed. While some continue to back the LDF, others are weighing Sudhakaran’s personal track record and contributions.
According to a voter named Shaji, "The sea is always a threat to the people living along the coast. The breakwater bridge has to be maintained and road development should be improved. Whoever is ruling now is doing good. All political parties talk negative about each other. Congress will blame LDF, and LDF blames UDF. When Sudhakaran sir has contested elections, he won by a large majority. However, it is doubtful that he will secure the same margin this time."
Meanwhile another voter named Girija says, "Our intention is to vote for those who actually deliver. What matters to us is what is being done for our place and for the people. We should not waste our vote. We want our vote to go to those who work for the development and welfare of the public. Sudhakaran sir has done well; we cannot say that he hasn't. He has contributed significantly, including setting up a hospital for the fisheries sector and supporting the fishermen community. We are children of the sea, and he has provided us with substantial financial support"
However, Sudhakaran’s decision to contest against the Left has not been universally welcomed. Some voters view his move as a betrayal of the party that shaped his political career.
Beyond party dynamics, local issues remain central to the electoral discourse. Coastal erosion, challenges faced by the fishing community, and infrastructure development continue to influence voter priorities.
Ambalapuzha, known for the iconic Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple and its famed palpayasam, as well as its association with literary legend Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, now finds itself at the centre of a rare political face-off between former allies.
One of the most closely watched contests in Kerala's 2026 Assembly elections, the constituency offers voters a compelling choice between party loyalty and the legacy of a seasoned leader as polling draws near.
