Ground collapse in Rajouri raises concerns over highway construction impact
A major land subsidence incident in Kotli-Kalaban village of Rajouri district, Jammu & Kashmir, has raised fresh concerns over infrastructure safety, highway construction impact and community livelihoods. Deep cracks have damaged agricultural land, homes and commercial buildings, with local residents alleging that excavation work linked to National Highway 44A triggered the ground collapse.
Locals claim warning signs appeared months earlier but their complaints received little response from authorities. One resident said the sudden sinking has placed shops and nearby homes in immediate danger.
Residents also alleged that heavy machinery and excavation activity accelerated the damage, while applications seeking intervention reportedly saw limited action.
Political leaders have called for a detailed geological survey and terrain assessment before carrying out large-scale projects in fragile hill regions.
As temporary repair work continues, affected families say development must not come at the expense of safety, land and livelihoods.
