Indian Ambassador highlights civilisational ties in viral China outreach video

India’s newly appointed Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has gained widespread attention on Chinese social media after posting a video in fluent Mandarin showcasing the Indian Embassy in Beijing and highlighting the deep cultural ties between India and China.
In the two-and-a-half-minute video, Doraiswami introduced various features of the embassy and spoke about the shared civilisational heritage of the two countries. Standing beside a bust of Rabindranath Tagore, he recalled the Nobel laureate’s historic visits to China and his vision of stronger Asian cultural connections.
The envoy’s Chinese name, Wei Jiameng, which translates to “one who forms an excellent alliance,” has also received positive reactions online. Many Chinese netizens praised the ambassador’s language skills and called for greater people-to-people exchanges, including easier visa procedures.
Doraiswami’s appointment comes as India and China work to stabilize relations following years of tensions along the border, with both sides recently restoring visa services and flight links.
