A Himalayan black bear has become the latest attraction at Dehradun Zoo, with its newly built enclosure inaugurated and now open for public viewing. The development is expected to boost visitor numbers, especially as the video of the new facility circulates online.

The enclosure was inaugurated on Wednesday in the presence of Uttarakhand Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal and senior forest department officials. The bear was earlier kept in private captivity in Jagrata before being relocated to the zoo for public display.

Speaking at the inauguration, Subodh Uniyal said the animal has now been formally dedicated to the zoo for public viewing.

“This is a domesticated bear that was earlier kept by a person in Jagrata. It was later brought here, and today it has been dedicated to this zoo so that the general public can see it. There are many wildlife lovers here,” he said.

He also highlighted the impact of earlier wildlife additions on tourism footfall at the facility.

“When we released a tiger here earlier, about 1.5 lakh tourists visited the zoo. With the arrival of this bear, I believe the number of tourists will increase further,” he added.

He further noted that growing public interest in wildlife experiences is directly contributing to eco-tourism growth and revenue generation in the state.

Spread across 25 hectares, Dehradun Zoo already features a wide range of animals, birds, and reptiles. Officials are now expecting another surge in visitors following the latest addition and the viral spread of the inauguration video.
