After several years, the traditional fish harvest festival returned to the Thuraiyur Big Lake in Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirappalli district, drawing enthusiastic participation from residents across the region. The sprawling 380-acre lake became a hub of activity as more than 1,000 people from over 10 villages, including Singalandapuram, Kalipatti, Ottampatti, Alathudayanpatti, Okkarai and Keerambur, gathered from as early as 5 a.m. to take part in the community event.

Armed with traditional fishing gear such as nets, hooks and hand-made equipment, participants waded into the lake to catch a variety of fish species. The harvest included Kendai, Keluthi, Paarai, Meesai Ira and Jilebi fish, with some weighing as much as 10 to 20 kilograms.

The festival not only celebrated a long-standing local tradition but also brought villagers together in a spirit of community. Many took their catch home for family meals, while others sold fish through on-the-spot auctions, giving visitors a chance to buy fresh fish directly from the lake.
