Walls once covered with political slogans and election graffiti now feature colourful murals of football icons including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. Flags of Argentina, Brazil, Portugal and other footballing nations stretch across roads and rooftops, creating a festival atmosphere.

Since the tournament began on June 11, football fans in Kolkata have turned public spaces into celebrations of the global game.

Often called India’s football capital, Kolkata’s connection with football goes far beyond match days. For residents, the FIFA World Cup is not just a sporting event—it is a cultural celebration shared by entire communities.
