Assam polls 2026: Golaghat tea workers protest delayed wages, threaten boycott

Golaghat, Assam: With the Assam Assembly elections approaching, discontent is brewing among tea plantation workers in Golaghat district, who have threatened to boycott the polls over long-pending grievances.

Workers from the Rangajan Tea Estate staged a protest on Wednesday, taking to the streets to highlight issues such as delayed wage payments and lack of basic benefits. Demonstrators accused estate management of continued negligence and failure to address their concerns.

According to the workers, wages are frequently delayed, and essential rations have not been provided for up to two years. The protestors gathered outside the District Commissioner’s office, demanding immediate intervention and settlement of their dues.

The unrest comes at a crucial time, as Assam is set to vote in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. Workers say unless their demands are met promptly, they may abstain from participating in the electoral process.
