‘The Indian crowd is wilder, more alive’: Tim Taste on performing at Kappa CULTR | WATCH

For electronic music aficionados, Tim Taste is a name that commands attention. Known as one of minimal techno’s most distinct voices, the German DJ and producer has spent over a decade crafting rhythms and textured tracks that span nearly 200 releases. But his first visit to South India, and specifically Kerala, offered him an entirely new canvas, one where culture, cuisine, and crowd energy collided with the pulse of his music.
Tim’s journey into electronic music was almost serendipitous.
“It was more or less a coincidence,” he recalls. “I had a good old friend who was a musician, a drummer in a metal band but he also made electronic music at home. One day he invited me to join him and show me how to do it.”
That moment in 2012 would set him on a path entirely unlike his early surroundings. Unlike many musicians, Tim didn’t start with traditional instruments. “I had no musical background or experience with instruments before that,” he says. “I just dove straight into electronic music production.”
His creative process is fluid. Sometimes a track begins with a melody or vocal; other times, it emerges from the fundamentals, the kick, bass, and drums evolving organically as he experiments with sounds. “It is an ongoing progress,” he adds. “I often feel like my current track is better than the previous one.”
First impressions of South India
For Tim, this was his first time deeply exploring South India, and Kerala offered surprises at every turn. “The audience and the people are amazing, but also the stage, the lighting, the sound system, and the technical setup really connect with me,” he says.
Comparing the crowd to his European experience, Tim is struck by the intensity. “In India, they celebrate the music more intensely. Germany is a bit quieter, whereas India feels wilder — more alive.”
His excitement for his Kappa CULTR set was palpable. “I expect it to be massive tonight because I saw videos from the previous days — it looked insane,” he says.
A night of new tracks and classics
Tim promises a set that will connect with the audience on multiple levels. “I am showcasing a lot of new tracks tonight...I hope they resonate. I also have a few classics ready.”
For a producer of his caliber, every performance is an opportunity to test, refine, and share his evolving sound. And in a place as vibrant as Kappa CULTR, the feedback is immediate, the energy of the crowd as dynamic as the music itself.
South India through the senses
Offstage, Tim embraced South India with the same curiosity he brings to music. Indian cuisine, he admits, was a revelation. “It is not similar to German food at all. It has much more spices and is so flavorful,” he says, citing a love for Dum chicken biryani and Malabar fish curry with Kerala rice.
“It’s been delicious,” he laughs. “I am a huge fan already.”
