‘Women should always be beneath us...’: Kollam Thulasi’s misogynistic remark triggers backlash | VIDEO

Kochi: Veteran actor Kollam Thulasi has come under intense criticism on social media after making controversial remarks perceived as sexist, shortly after casting his vote in the AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) elections held on Friday at a hotel in Edappally.

As he was leaving the venue, Thulasi was asked by the media about his views on leadership within AMMA. In response, he said in Malayalam, “They say women will rule, we say men will rule. We have to wait and see what happens.” 

When further asked if he preferred male leadership in the organisation, he added, “Men should rule, right? Women should always be beneath us. Isn’t it? Go use that (for views). Men should always be above women. Isn’t it?”

He then followed up with a sarcastic remark: “Now they will become my enemies. I was just joking, okay?”

Despite the disclaimer, his comments have sparked widespread backlash online, with many social media users condemning his statements as misogynistic and regressive. Critics have pointed out that such views are especially disappointing coming from a senior member of the film industry.

The election itself marked a major moment for AMMA, with actor Shwetha Menon being elected as the first woman President, defeating actor Devan by 27 votes. Kukku Parameswaran won the post of General Secretary, defeating Ravindran. Lakshmi Priya and Jayan Cherthala were elected as Vice Presidents. Unni Sivapal took the position of Treasurer, while Ansiba was elected unopposed as Joint Secretary.
