Women in Cinema Collective applauds release of Hema Committee report

Kozhikode: The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) has expressed its satisfaction with the release of the Hema Committee report, a landmark document addressing gender issues within the Indian film industry. The committee, established following a petition from the WCC, is the first of its kind in India to examine the challenges and injustices faced by women in cinema.
The WCC's statement referenced the committee’s report metaphorically, likening the initial allure of the film industry to a starry sky that, upon scientific scrutiny, reveals less glamour. They urged caution against taking everything at face value, reflecting the committee’s findings.
The report’s release marks a significant milestone in the fight for professional equity in the film industry. The WCC praised the efforts of Justice Hema, Smt. Sharada, and Dr. Vasanthakumari for their dedication in compiling the report, which represents a historic moment in Indian cinema for its focus on gender disparities.
The WCC also expressed gratitude to the media, the Women’s Commission, the people of Kerala, women’s organizations, and lawyers for their support. They voiced hope that the government would implement the committee’s recommendations, underscoring the importance of heeding women's voices in the industry.
