Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ releases tomorrow; A look at the controversies around his last film

Actor Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’ was originally planned as a major Pongal release on January 9, 2026. The film carried significance beyond being Vijay’s next big-screen outing. It was positioned as his final film before his full-time political career, with the actor having already launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and prepared for a more direct role in Tamil Nadu politics.

Instead of arriving during the festive release window, the H Vinoth directorial became entangled in a certification dispute that eventually moved to the Madras High Court. The delay continued for months, and the film’s release timeline remained uncertain as the legal proceedings progressed.

The situation became even more complicated because of the film’s political context. ‘Jana Nayagan’ was expected to release in 2026, the year leading up to the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, while Vijay’s growing political profile made the film more closely watched than a conventional commercial release.

Censor controversy began with a complaint from an examining committee member

The dispute emerged during the film’s certification process. After the film was viewed by a five-member examining committee, the producer received communication from the CBFC’s Chennai regional office regarding certification.

The process later faced a setback after a member of the examining committee raised objections. The matter was referred for further examination, leaving the film without the clearance needed for its scheduled release in January.

Among the issues raised were references connected to the Indian Army and the presence of an army-related emblem. The complaint also questioned the absence of a defence or security expert on the examining panel despite the film containing military-related material.

The controversy eventually became the central issue in the legal proceedings surrounding ‘Jana Nayagan’.

Madras HC proceedings changed release plans

The producers approached the Madras High Court after the certification process stalled. A single judge initially directed the CBFC to issue a UA 16+ certificate to the film.

That order was later set aside by a division bench of the Madras High Court. The bench held that the CBFC should have been given adequate time to respond to the producers’ plea before such a direction was issued. The case was sent back for fresh consideration.

The court proceedings also brought attention to concerns involving military symbols, references that could affect religious or communal sentiments and scenes involving foreign forces and unrest. With the matter returning to the single judge, the film’s release remained dependent on the next stage of the legal process.

The decision effectively pushed ‘Jana Nayagan’ further away from its planned Pongal release.

Election calendar added another layer of uncertainty

The delay also raised questions about whether ‘Jana Nayagan’ could reach theatres before the Model Code of Conduct came into effect for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

The film’s release was already being viewed through the lens of Vijay’s political transition. He is the founder of TVK and has positioned the party for its first electoral contest. The timing of ‘Jana Nayagan’s release therefore became part of a wider discussion about cinema, politics and the possible impact of a politically charged film during an election period.

The situation also led to comparisons with the 2019 release controversy surrounding a biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. TVK representatives rejected the comparison, pointing out that ‘Jana Nayagan’ is a fictional film rather than a biopic centred on the achievements of a political leader.

Vijay’s political transition made the film’s release even more significant

‘Jana Nayagan’ is being released at a defining point in Vijay’s career. The actor has moved from being one of Tamil cinema’s biggest stars to leading a political party.

His political positions have also been clearly stated. Vijay has described the DMK as his political adversary and the BJP as his ideological opponent. He has also ruled out an alliance with the BJP and AIADMK.

Against that backdrop, ‘Jana Nayagan’ has been watched not just as a commercial film but also as Vijay’s final major screen appearance before his full-time political entry.

The film stars Vijay in the lead and is directed by H Vinoth. Its story is built around a mass leader confronting injustice, placing the film within a political and social action-drama space.

Hit by online leak

After the certification and court-related delays, ‘Jana Nayagan’ faced another major setback when an unauthorised version of the film appeared online ahead of its theatrical release.

The leak led to speculation that the film may have been deliberately released online to influence Vijay’s political prospects. Director H Vinoth rejected the allegation and described the claim as politically motivated.

Speaking ahead of the July 23 release, Vinoth questioned why a film reportedly made on a budget of around ₹400 crore would be intentionally leaked. He also said the matter had been taken up as a legal issue after a complaint from the producers.

The director described the long wait between the planned January release and the eventual July release as a period of distress, while also expressing relief that the film had finally reached the theatrical stage.

Why the leak could affect ‘Jana Nayagan’s opening

The online leak has created a different challenge for the film’s theatrical run. Vijay’s final film was expected to generate enormous opening-day interest, particularly because it was originally scheduled for the lucrative Pongal period.

However, the delay and the circulation of the leaked version have changed the release landscape.

Advance booking figures cited in the compiled reports showed strong interest across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, although the early numbers were behind the advance bookings recorded by Vijay’s previous films, Leo and The Greatest of All Time.

Leo opened with a reported worldwide first-day collection of ₹148.5 crore, while The Greatest of All Time recorded a worldwide opening of ₹126.32 crore. ‘Jana Nayagan’ now arrives after a much longer wait, with the film’s theatrical performance being closely watched after the disruption caused by the leak.
