'Some directors told me I am wasting my talent...'; Urvashi reflects at Kerala State Film Awards

Veteran actor Urvashi, upon receiving the Kerala State Award for Best Actress, remarked that she has never performed with accolades in mind. In fact, she said, awards only cross her mind in moments like this—when she is reminded that this is, impressively, her sixth state award.
Expressing her heartfelt gratitude, Urvashi recalled the moment she won her very first award. At the time, it marked a milestone in the history of the Kerala State Film Awards—it was the first time a performer was recognised for a role that wasn’t the central character in the film.
“There were people who used to say I was wasting my acting talent in roles like Mazhavilkavadi and Varthamanakalam with only a few scenes—directors of classic cinema,” she shared. “Back then, it was unheard of for a mainstream film like that to be honoured in this way.”
She admitted that she hadn’t fully grasped the value of that early recognition at the time.
Reflecting on her latest win, Urvashi thanked Ullozhukku director Christo Tomy, whose film earned her the award, and expressed deep appreciation for co-star Parvathy Thiruvothu, who she said was her biggest support during the project.
