From fan tribute to controversy: What happened with Thalapathy Vijay-themed Ganesha idols
Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Chennai got an unusual pop-culture twist this year, with Ganesha idols inspired by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay installed in the RK Nagar and Korukkupet areas.
The idols brought together references from Vijay’s film career and political journey. One of the most noticeable designs was inspired by his character Saravanavelu from the 2004 film Ghilli, in which he starred opposite Trisha Krishnan. Other idols were modelled on Vijay’s political campaign appearance, including his bicycle ride, while another depicted a look associated with his current political persona.

The unusual idols quickly caught attention online, with photos and videos from the area circulating on social media. Vijay fans and locals were also seen visiting the installations and taking pictures with the statues.
The installation reportedly featured three different representations of Vijay. One showed the Ganesha idol in the ‘Ghilli’ kabaddi-player look. Another recreated Vijay’s political campaign appearance, with a TVK scarf and bicycle. A third was designed around his political image, including the hand gesture associated with him during his Assembly appearance.
The idea came from Rajesh, a Vijay fan who also worked as the sculptor behind the idols
Police complaint filed after idols go viral
However, the attention around the idols also led to a complaint against Rajesh. According to reports, the complaint was filed after visuals of the statues began circulating online.
Police officials subsequently reached the location and asked Rajesh to remove the idols.
