'String of objectifying scenes, total embarrassment': Netizens fume over Janhvi's portrayal in Peddi

The sports drama Peddi, starring Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor, has sparked a severe social media backlash since its theatrical release on Thursday, June 4. Viewers have heavily scrutinised the film over its portrayal of the female lead, accusing the writers of objectifying and mishandling her character.
The controversy largely centres on the writing of Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyamma, rather than the film's direction. Audiences argue her role lacks agency and primarily serves as an object of desire. On X, one user expressed deep frustration, stating: “the heroine deserved a character. Instead she got a string of vulgar, degrading, objectifying scenes stitched together and called a role. It ain’t bold.. it ain’t glamorous.. it’s just poor & cringe writing.. a complete embarrassment to every women in the audience..,”
Furthermore, viewers have condemned how the director framed non-consensual touching and a forced kiss during a power cut as "romance."
Directed by Buchi Babu Sana, the film also features Vijay Sethupathi, Boman Irani, Divyenndu, and Jagapathi Babu in pivotal roles alongside the main leads.(With inputs from Agencies)
