Kochi: Actress Shwetha Menon has made history as the first woman elected president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) in its 31-year history.

Responding to the media after her victory, Shwetha said she sought the blessings of all industry veterans.

“I don’t have an agenda, but I do have a personal plan,” she said. “With 506 members, this is a big family, and I will try to keep everyone together. As women, we are multitaskers, so I’m hoping it won’t be too difficult. Keeping my fingers crossed, I should be able to do something really good. It’s going to be a baby step, so please don’t expect miracles soon. We will be doing something for a change.”

The contest drew significant attention as it was the first time a woman contested for the top post, although only 298 of AMMA’s 506 eligible voters cast their ballots, a lower turnout than in the last election.

Shwetha also thanked the media and members who voted for her. “You told AMMA to be a woman, and now it has become a woman,” she said.

“In cinema, I believe there is no man or woman; we are all characters. Life is like the duration between action and cut, I believe. Thank you again. I am ready to answer, and I am now assuming a duty. Kindly support me and my team. Please feel free to ask questions, but avoid triggering any controversies.”
