Why was Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs taken to hospital from prison? What we know

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was taken from the federal prison where he is serving a sentence to a hospital early on Saturday after reportedly sustaining a head injury. The rapper was subsequently returned to the facility, with reports indicating that the injury was not life-threatening.
Combs, 56, is incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Fort Dix in New Jersey. According to TMZ, citing sources at the prison, an ambulance left the facility at around 1 am on Saturday, October 10, to transport him for medical treatment. A source familiar with the matter also confirmed to PEOPLE that he had been taken to hospital.
Reports said Combs was conscious and able to speak when he returned to the prison before sunrise. However, the circumstances that led to the reported injury remain unclear.
Sean Combs' representative responds to hospital reports
Combs' representative, Juda Engelmayer, said the team was seeking to establish what had happened following reports of the medical emergency.
“We are aware of the reports concerning Sean Combs and are working to confirm the circumstances,” said Combs’ spokesperson Juda Engelmayer. “Sean’s health and well-being are our immediate concern, and we appreciate everyone who has reached out.”
According to a source cited by PEOPLE, Combs was placed in solitary confinement after returning to Fort Dix. It has not been established how he sustained the injury or whether it was connected to any incident inside the prison.
Reports of prison privileges and disciplinary action
The reported hospital visit comes amid scrutiny of Combs' conditions behind bars. In late September, NBC News reported that the music mogul had allegedly been enjoying privileges and access to prohibited items while serving his sentence.
The report claimed that Combs had access to mobile phones that allowed him to browse Instagram and view sexually explicit photographs. It also alleged that he received alcohol smuggled into the prison by guards.
Following the reports, Combs was reportedly sanctioned for “disruptive conduct” and lost 41 days of good conduct credit, delaying his projected release from January 2028 to March 2028. The allegations concerning his access to contraband and special privileges have not been independently established.
Combs had previously been reported to be in the prison's Special Housing Unit amid the controversy over his treatment at the facility.
Earlier reported altercation with another inmate
Combs was also reportedly involved in a physical confrontation with another inmate at Fort Dix in July. According to a source cited by ABC News, the incident began after another prisoner allegedly made a remark to him, leading to a fight.
He was subsequently placed in solitary confinement, according to reports. It remains unclear whether the reported altercation had any connection to his recent hospital visit.
Fort Dix is a low-security federal prison located approximately 40 miles outside Philadelphia. Combs was transferred there from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn in late October 2025, after spending time in custody in New York.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs' prison sentence and release date
Combs is serving a 50-month federal prison sentence following his conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution in October 2025. A jury acquitted him of sex trafficking and racketeering charges.
His projected release date is currently listed as March 2, 2028. The date was previously expected to fall in January 2028 but was reportedly moved back after the disciplinary action linked to the alleged contraband.
The rapper's legal troubles have also continued outside prison. Last week, he was ordered to pay NBCUniversal $477,700 in legal fees after losing a $100 million defamation lawsuit concerning the documentary ‘Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy’.
