Salman Khan was only 10 when he saw his mother in pain as Salim Khan fell in love with Helen

Salman Khan grew up witnessing the pain his mother endured whenever his father Salim Khan expressed affection for Helen. At that time, Salman was only about 10 years old.
Helen’s family had migrated from Myanmar to India during Japan’s occupation. Her mother worked as a nurse in India. From a very young age, Helen gave up her studies to support her family financially, starting her career as a dancer. She shot to fame overnight with her solo dance performance in the film ‘Howrah Bridge’.
In 1978, during the shooting of the movie ‘Don’, renowned screenwriter Salim Khan met Helen. Salim Khan had already been married to Salma Khan (Sushila Charak) and had children: Salman, Arbaaz, Sohail and Alvira. Salma entered Salim Khan’s life at a young age and grew up in a loving, close-knit family.
However, Salim Khan and Helen grew closer through conversations on set and daily interactions, and their friendship gradually blossomed into love. This created unease within the family environment. Salim Khan spent long hours on set, and Helen was present for the shoots. Amid all this, young Salman silently bore the emotional turbulence, sensing his mother’s pain despite her efforts to shield him from it. Those were among the most emotionally challenging years of Salman’s childhood.
Eventually, Salim Khan married Helen, a decision that initially brought tension and uncertainty to the family. Over time, however, that initial rift gradually healed. Helen integrated into the family with care and sensitivity, respecting boundaries and gaining the trust and respect of the children.
Today, the unity within the Khan family is widely admired. Salim Khan, Salma Khan and Helen attend celebrations and gatherings together, and Salman frequently speaks about Helen with love and gratitude. Despite the difficult early years, the family grew stronger, showing how love, patience and understanding can heal even the deepest wounds.
