Retro swag: Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan recreate 80s icons in Nelson’s KHxRK promo | WATCH

Indian cinema reached a historic milestone on Saturday as superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan officially unveiled their first joint on-screen project in nearly five decades. The announcement was made via a high-concept promotional video released by Red Giant Movies at exactly 12:07 PM, a time symbolically combining the actors' birth dates: November 7 for Haasan and December 12 for Rajinikanth.
Tentatively titled KHxRK, the project marks the first time the "Superstar" and the "Ulaganayagan" (Universal Hero) have shared a full-fledged frame since the 1979 cult classic Ninaithale Inikkum.
The Promo: Retro Aesthetics and quirky humour
The three-minute promotional video, which immediately trended globally, leverages a "born cool, built retro" aesthetic that pays homage to the duo’s shared history in the 1970s and 80s.
- The Visuals: Both legends appear in vintage-inspired leather jackets, standing alongside a classic Mercedes-Benz. Digital de-ageing technology is reportedly being utilised to recreate their iconic appearances from the early years of their careers, presenting a "retro swag" look.
- The Tone: Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar (Jailer), the promo features the director's signature dark humour and quirky charm. The icons engage in lively, self-aware banter, jokingly raising the question of who the "hero" of the film actually is, leaving the promo on a mysterious and playful note.
- The Score: The teaser is punctuated by a high-energy, nostalgic background score by Anirudh Ravichander, who continues his streak as the primary musical collaborator for both stars.
Production and Creative Team
The film is being bankrolled by Red Giant Movies, marking their 17th production venture.
- The Director's Chair: Nelson Dilipkumar, who previously directed Rajinikanth in the blockbuster Jailer, is officially confirmed as the director. This project marks his first time directing Kamal Haasan.
- Filming Schedule: Principal photography is expected to commence soon, likely after the actors fulfil current commitments. Rajinikanth recently wrapped Jailer 2 and is slated for Thalaivar 173, while Haasan remains busy with Anbarivu and the sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD.
Historical Context: The "Biscuit" Analogy
The reunion resolves a four-decade professional separation. In the early 1980s, the two icons famously decided to stop co-starring to ensure producers could afford individual leads, a move Kamal Haasan previously described using a biscuit analogy.
"We were separate because they gave one biscuit to both of us," Haasan noted in a statement reflected in the production's press materials. "But the half-biscuit makes us both happy now, so we will come together."
