‘Rajini sir called me... I did not pick up...’: Malavika Mohanan

Malavika Mohanan, one of the most sought-after actors in South Indian cinema at the moment, is a mix of beauty and talent — an actor trying to break conventions and push for excellence. Whether it be in her first Tamil film Master or her upcoming, much-anticipated Malayalam film with Mohanlal — Hridayapoorvam, directed by veteran filmmaker Sathyan Anthikkad — she adds value to every project she is involved in. Her fans, along with the rest of the audience, eagerly await every update on Malavika’s life on and off the screen. The actor, who is considerably active on social media, often shares updates about her work and life — she is clearly an actor treading her own path.
However, what’s making news right now is a recent candid confession made by the actor in a conversation with Filmfare, where she recalled an ‘intriguing’ incident that took place right after the release of Master, which also starred Thalapathy Vijay and Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi alongside her.
“It was after the release of Master,” the actor recalled. “I received multiple calls from an unknown number. Initially, I avoided them. After some time, I received a call from a PR person I know — he was frantic, asking me, ‘Amma, why are you not picking up Rajini Sir’s call?’ I was taken aback for a moment. I mean, what do you do when you’ve just ignored a call from the Superstar?” she shared, recounting her moment of embarrassment.
Talking further about the now-funny incident, Malavika said, “Soon, I called back the initial number. A person picked it up, but I knew it was definitely not Rajinikanth. But then, Thalaivar came on the line. I was taken aback by his humility. I’m a fresher in the industry, and he showered me with praises like, ‘You were looking beautiful in Master. Congrats on the astounding success of your film.’ That was truly a moment,” Malavika recalled, feeling grateful.
The anecdote serves as yet another example of the grounded nature of superstars — many of whom welcome fresh talent with open arms, lavish praise, and support, never letting egos get in the way. It’s a testament to true artists who appreciate and respect the craft.
