Raj B Shetty’s fierce look as ‘Maveera’ in ‘Karavali’ leaves fans intrigued | WATCH TEASER

After the success of Su From So, Kannada actor Raj B Shetty is back in the spotlight with his intense new avatar in Karavali, a coastal action drama directed by Gurudatha Ganiga and headlined by Prajwal Devaraj. Set against the culturally rich backdrop of Karnataka’s coastal belt, the film delves into the raw themes of man versus beast, tradition versus instinct, and survival versus morality.
Raj B Shetty plays the pivotal role of Maveera, a character deeply rooted in the region's traditions. His striking introduction in the poster — flanked by buffaloes, whip in hand, and eyes blazing with determination — has captured widespread attention online. The character’s look has already fuelled speculation among fans, with many wondering: Is he a Kambala racer or a symbolic guardian of tradition?
Speaking about the character, director Gurudatha Ganiga said, "When we started writing the film, we had no idea who would play Maveera. After releasing the first teaser the response was overwhelming, especially from the people of South Canara, who understand the essence of Kambala and the spirit behind this ten second sport."
Ganiga recalled the casting process and how several actors were approached before Raj B Shetty came on board. "We tried several actors. They liked the character, but something didn't click. Since the film is rooted in coastal rituals, we wanted someone who truly understood the cultural weight of the role," he said.
Ganiga added that Raj initially couldn’t commit due to his packed schedule, including work on Su From So. But the director persisted. "I met Raj and narrated the story. But he was caught up with several commitments, including Su from So. I didn't give up. After five meetings, he said, 'If you don't mind, can I watch some portions you've shot?' I agreed, and once he saw the footage, he said yes. Raj didn't just play Maveera, he lived him."
The promotional poster titled “Arrival of Maveera” captures Raj in a fierce, mud-streaked form, torch in hand, hinting at the mythic and symbolic weight the character carries in the narrative.
Shot extensively in the heart of coastal Karnataka, Karavali is more than just a regional action film. It weaves local rituals, emotional storytelling, and visceral conflict into a cinematic experience that aims to strike a chord with both local and pan-Indian audiences. The film explores intense themes such as loyalty, survival, and the primal conflict between humans and animals. As Ganiga puts it, “The tagline 'Animal vs Human' isn't just dramatic, it reflects the emotional and cultural stakes of the film.”
Joining Raj and Prajwal Devaraj in the cast are Mithra in a key role, Ramesh Indira in an intense performance, and Sampada as the female lead. The film is jointly backed by VK Films and Ganiga Films. The soundtrack is composed by Sachin Basrur, with cinematography by Abhimanyu Sadanandan.
Currently in its final stages of patchwork and dubbing, Karavali is slated for release later this year.
