Quit acting because Mahesh didn't want me to work; We had even stayed apart: Namrata

Once a bustling leading lady in the film industry, actor Namrata Shirodkar graced the screen alongside some of the biggest stars like Salman Khan, Chiranjeevi, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Mammootty. Today, after years in the spotlight, she leads a contented family life as the wife of another superstar, Mahesh Babu. This is the story of Namrata Shirodkar, the former actor who now enjoys a fulfilling life behind the scenes.
Namrata first rose to fame in 1993 when she was crowned Femina Miss India, which naturally paved the way for her entry into cinema. She made her debut in 1998 with the Hindi film Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai. In 2000, she ventured into Telugu cinema, marking her debut in Vamsi, where Mahesh Babu played the lead role. Mahesh Babu is the son of the legendary Telugu actor and director Krishna, a significant figure in Telugu cinema. Namrata's entry into the Telugu film industry was almost by chance, as she knew very little about it. However, Mahesh, having been born into a film family, formed a natural bond with her, and they became close friends.
The shooting of Vamsi took them to New Zealand for 52 days, where the two grew closer, understanding each other better. Their friendship eventually turned into love, although they took great care to keep it away from gossip columns. Soon enough, they decided to marry. However, their path to marriage was not without obstacles. The most significant opposition came from Mahesh's family. The fact that Namrata was four years older than Mahesh, combined with the reluctance of Mahesh’s father to have a film actor as a daughter-in-law, caused complications. In the end, they overcame all obstacles and tied the knot in 2005.
Namrata's film career spanned multiple languages, including Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi, and Malayalam. She featured in a variety of films, such as Hero Hindustani, Pukar, Astitva, Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, Tehseeb, Insaaf: The Justice and more. She became particularly familiar to Malayalam audiences through the movie Ezhupunna Tharakan.
Stepping away from the spotlight
Before marriage, Namrata had completed all her film commitments. After getting married, Mahesh Babu reportedly requested that she quit acting. Namrata later revealed in interviews, "Mahesh wanted a wife who wasn't working. He had expressed this during our relationship, and had I been in an office job, he would have still asked me to leave it. I never had aspirations to be a top heroine, so when I stopped acting, I didn’t feel disappointed."
Namrata also spoke about the adjustments she had to make after marriage. "I was used to living in flats in Mumbai, which was quite comfortable. However, Mahesh had a large bungalow in Hyderabad, and moving from a flat to a bungalow was the most difficult change for me. Mahesh understood this, and after our wedding, we stayed in Mumbai for some time. Later, we moved to a flat in Hyderabad before finally settling into the bungalow."
Soon after their marriage, they welcomed their first child, Gautham. However, rumours circulated that Namrata and Mahesh had separated, with Namrata moving to Mumbai with their son. Namrata later opened up about this phase of her life, explaining that it was a rough time for Mahesh, who was facing confusion in his career. "I had lost my parents, and there were some disagreements. We stayed apart for a while, but during that time, we both found strength and clarity in our partnership." After a brief separation, they reunited, and in 2012, their family grew with the arrival of a daughter, Sitara.
'Behind every successful man'
Mahesh Babu frequently credits Namrata as the key to his success. In interviews, he has said, "I don’t think anything would have happened without her. Doesn’t every successful man have a woman behind him? In my case, it is definitely Namrata."
Currently, Namrata manages her family responsibilities while also overseeing the operations of G. Mahesh Babu Entertainment, the production company of her husband. Though she has stepped away from the limelight, Namrata remains an influential figure behind the scenes, supporting her family and managing the business aspects of Mahesh Babu’s career.
Her transition from a celebrated actor to a dedicated wife and mother is a testament to her love and commitment. Now, with two children and a thriving family life, Namrata continues to be an integral part of her husband’s success and their beautiful family journey.
