‘No country for us women...’ Parvathy explodes after 20-year verdict

Actor Parvathy Thiruvoth has reacted to the sentencing of Pulsar Suni and five others who received 20 years of rigorous imprisonment in the 2017 actress assault case. In a social-media post, Parvathy wrote that the court had given the minimum punishment with maximum consideration to the convicts.
“Minimum sentence. maximum consideration for criminals. No country for us women. Ok. Noted,” she wrote.
“Whenever criminals file an appeal, there is every possibility that their sentence may be reduced. And this is happening in our Kerala. Are we expected to first survive the assault and then survive the legal system?” Parvathy added.
The sentence was delivered by Ernakulam Principal Sessions Judge Honey M Varghese after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.
The court said that considering the age of the accused, their family backgrounds, and the argument that they had no prior criminal history, there was no circumstance that warranted the maximum punishment.
Along with Pulsar Suni, the court had on Monday found Martin Antony, B. Manikandan, V P Vijesh, H Salim (Vadival Salim) and Pradeep guilty. The charges proven against them include gang rape, among others.
In the related case of abducting the actress and recording humiliating visuals, the court had acquitted actor Dileep and three others. After that verdict, Parvathy wrote that it felt like “a well-written script unravelled in the most brutal way.”
The judgment in the case, related to the abduction and recording of the actress, has come eight years after the incident. The crime took place on February 17, 2017, when the actress was on her way from Thrissur to Ernakulam for a film shoot.
She was allegedly abducted on a quotation contract, and objectionable visuals were recorded during the assault.
