Did Naga Chaitanya cheat on Samantha? Actor takes legal action over viral claims

Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya has moved the Delhi High Court against the unauthorised use of his name, image and likeness online, raising concerns over AI-generated content, deepfakes, explicit search terms and defamatory material linked to his personal life.
The actor's petition seeks protection of his personality rights and asks the court to prevent the misuse of his identity for commercial purposes without consent.
What prompted the legal action?
The matter came before Justice Jyoti Singh after senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Chaitanya, argued that several websites were using the actor's name alongside explicit and objectionable search terms to drive online traffic.
According to the petition, online platforms have allegedly circulated manipulated content, AI-generated videos and misleading material that harms the actor's reputation.
One of the key concerns highlighted before the court involved content claiming that Chaitanya cheated on his former wife, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and was responsible for damaging her career.
His legal team argued that such claims were not fair criticism but amounted to targeted trolling and defamation.
The petition states that artificial intelligence tools, deepfake technology, voice-cloning software and digital manipulation techniques are being used to create and circulate fabricated audiovisual material featuring the actor.
According to the complaint, the content is being distributed for commercial gain and has caused significant damage to Chaitanya's dignity, privacy, public image and professional reputation.
His legal team also informed the court that pornographic and objectionable content falsely depicting the actor had surfaced online, further intensifying concerns about misuse of emerging technologies.
Merchandise and unauthorised commercial use
Apart from defamatory content, the High Court was also shown examples of unauthorised merchandise allegedly using Chaitanya's likeness and identity without permission.
The actor's counsel argued that Chaitanya is one of the leading figures in the Telugu film industry and that his name and image hold significant commercial value.
The petition seeks legal safeguards against unauthorised exploitation of that identity. During the hearing, Justice Jyoti Singh acknowledged that public figures are naturally exposed to greater scrutiny than private individuals but emphasised that such scrutiny has limits.
The court observed that while celebrities may be vulnerable to criticism and public discussion, defamatory or misleading content cannot be justified simply because a person is in the public eye.
The judge also noted that at least one of the links identified in the complaint appeared to be "borderline" in nature.
Chaitanya's counsel argued that harmful content continues to appear online daily and requested a dynamic injunction that would allow future infringing content to be addressed without repeated court proceedings.
Court issues summons
The Delhi High Court issued summons in the matter and indicated that an interim order would be passed. The case has been listed for further hearing on September 30.
According to Chaitanya's legal team, several links have already been removed, although some news-related content remains accessible online. The petition also pointed out that Chaitanya's father, veteran actor Nagarjuna, had previously obtained legal protection for his personality rights through similar court proceedings.
The case reflects growing concerns within the entertainment industry over the misuse of celebrity identities through AI-generated content and deepfake technologies.
Chaitanya and Samantha's relationship
Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu were among the most popular celebrity couples in the Telugu film industry. After several years of dating, the pair married in 2017. In 2021, they announced their separation and later finalised their divorce, ending months of speculation surrounding their relationship.
Chaitanya subsequently married actress Sobhita Dhulipala, while Samantha has continued her acting career and public appearances.
The latest legal dispute does not concern their personal relationship directly but focuses on online content that Chaitanya claims falsely portrays events surrounding their separation.
The case highlights the growing legal challenges posed by artificial intelligence, deepfake technology and online misinformation.
As AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated, courts across India are seeing a rise in cases involving personality rights, privacy concerns and digital impersonation, particularly involving celebrities and public figures.
The Delhi High Court's eventual ruling could contribute to the evolving legal framework governing the use of AI-generated content and celebrity identities online.
