Kaviyoor Ponnamma’s legacy: The unmatched portrayal of mothers in Malayalam cinema

Veteran Malayalam actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma passed away on Friday, leaving behind a lasting legacy cherished by Malayalis worldwide. Often referred to as the "Amma" (Mother) of Malayalam cinema, she brought to life unforgettable characters that will forever remain in the hearts of fans.
Ponnamma was known for playing 'Amma' characters in Malayalam cinema. There was an era when it was hard to imagine seeing another actor play the role of mother. Interestingly, she began portraying elderly roles at just 22 years old. In the 1965 film 'Thommante Makkal', she played the mother of Sathyan and Madhu, who were actually older than her in real life.
She has played the role of mother to legendary actors like Sathyan and Prem Nazir, Mammootty, Mohanlal and many more. However, her chemistry with Mohanlal has been greatly appreciated by the audience. In fact, in an interview, she even said that she sees Mohanlal as her "own son." Her scenes with superstar Mohanlal always turned out to be a smashing combination and won the hearts of many and films like ‘Thenmavin Kombath’ and ‘Kireedam’ will go down as all-time hits. Ponnamma and Mohanlal acted in around 50 films together.
Despite suggestions to change her name to Ponnamma to avoid being typecast, she remained steadfast, wishing to honour the name given to her by her parents throughout her career.
Though she recognized the risk of being typecast, Ponnamma embraced the numerous mother roles that defined her career. She acted in over 400 films, primarily portraying maternal figures.
In 1965, she played the mother of Sathyan and Madhu in 'Thommante Makkal', as well as TG Ravi in 'Padasaram'. Veteran actor Thilakan started his career by playing the character of her son in the 1973 film 'Periyar'.
'Nirmalyam' (1973), written, produced, and directed by MT Vasudevan Nair, was one of Kaviyoor Ponnamma's early notable films. In this critically acclaimed work, she portrayed the wife of the film's central character, further solidifying her place in Malayalam cinema.
That same year, she made history by playing actor Sathyan's wife as well as mother in two films, a rare achievement for any actress at the time. Ponnamma received four Best Supporting Actress Awards in 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1994.
Her notable films include Asuravithu, Velutha Kathreena, KarakanaKadal, Theerthayathra, Nirmalyam,Chenkol, Bharatham, Santanagopalam, Kireedam, Sukrutham, and many more. She also lent her voice as a playback singer in eight films and appeared in over 25 television series.
In addition to her mother's roles, she portrayed diverse characters, including negative roles. She acted in around 1,000 films and even produced the movie Meghatheertham.
