Kottarakkara: The iconic Mercedes-Benz driven by Mammootty in the film Valliettan has a history that goes beyond its role in the movie. Now making a return through a 4K remaster of the film, the car -- bearing the number plate KL 02 AC 6298 -- carries a story of its own that intertwines with the movie's success.

In the classic 2000 film Valliettan, Mammootty's character, Arakkal Madhavanunni, drove the prestigious Mercedes-Benz throughout the movie. However, during the filming of the dramatic chase scene, the car was accidentally damaged when it crashed into a rock. The film’s tight schedule, which only had three days left for shooting, meant that a double for the car had to step in for some scenes, and a rented car from Chennai was used to complete the shoot.

The story of Valliettan is inspired by the real-life experiences of Jayakumar, the elder brother of Shaji Kailas. The Mercedes-Benz used in the film was not purchased specifically for the movie but was part of the family's personal collection, with director Shaji Kailas insisting on using the car and even an elephant from the Ambalakkara family. While the elephant was unavailable for filming due to its behavioural issues, another elephant from Cheroor Mana in Triprayar was used. This elephant later died after being bitten by a cobra.

Mammootty and the car's legacy

Mammootty, who loved cars, had a playful rivalry with the car's owner, Ambalakkara Baiju, regarding whose car could go faster. Baiju recalls how, at times, Mammootty would race the car back to his residence after shooting, with a bit of friendly banter about which car was superior. Once, when Benz won the race, Mammootty even spoke highly of its performance.

The car's fame grew alongside Valliettan's success. Following the release of the film, the popularity of the white Mercedes-Benz soared, leading to increased sales for the brand that year.

After the film’s success, the Benz was not immediately sold despite high demand for the car. Eventually, it was sold to a doctor from Kollam, who agreed to the asking price. The car later changed hands several times and is currently owned by Tom, a resident of Thiruvalla.

Valliettan returns

As Valliettan is re-released in 4K with enhanced features, it is a reminder of the legacy of Arakkal Madhavanunni and the film's unforgettable elements - such as the Benz and the iconic Arakkal Tharavad, which has sadly lost some of its former grandeur. Despite its decline, plans for a sequel are underway, promising to bring back the pride and legacy of the Tharavad and its iconic characters.
