Madras HC dismisses Netflix request to reject Dhanush's copyright case

The Madras High Court has rejected applications by Netflix India’s entity, Los Gatos, to dismiss a copyright infringement case filed by Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar. The case involves allegations that behind-the-scenes footage from Dhanush's movie Naanum Rowdy Daan was used without permission in the making of Nayanthara's documentary, Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale.

Justice Abdul Quddhose, who is overseeing the case, confirmed that he will hear the interim injunction application from Wunderbar on 5 February 2025.

Jurisdiction of case

Dhanush’s production company had moved the court, claiming that certain behind-the-scenes footage from Naanum Rowdy Daan had been used improperly in the documentary without obtaining proper consent. Although Netflix India operates from Mumbai, which falls outside the jurisdiction of the Madras High Court, the court allowed Dhanush's application to sue the company in Chennai.
