‘Lucifer 3’ is coming! Antony Perumbavoor confirms Mohanlal’s next big movie

Producer Antony Perumbavoor has once again confirmed the third instalment of Lucifer, starring Mohanlal and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran. He said work on the film is currently progressing during a podcast on the Hedge Club YouTube channel.

Antony also responded to questions from fans about why Drishyam 2 and Bro Daddy were not released in theatres.

Responding to a question about the overseas reception Malayalam cinema received following Empuraan, Antony said the third part of the Lucifer franchise will definitely be made. He said films such as Empuraan are important for Malayalam cinema to make significant gains in overseas markets.

He subsequently spoke about the sequel, confirming that work on the third instalment is continuing.

Why were Drishyam 2 and Bro Daddy released on OTT?

Antony addressed questions surrounding Drishyam 2 and Bro Daddy while discussing the challenges faced by the Malayalam film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic and how Aashirvad Cinemas responded to the crisis.

“During the COVID period, Aashirvad produced six films. All of these were films made for OTT. When these films became big successes, people ask why they were not released in theatres. Bro Daddy and Drishyam 2 were not films made for theatrical release. Those films were released at a time when no one was stepping out of their homes. Since they were released on OTT, many people around the world who were not Malayalis also watched the films,” he said.

He added that the OTT releases helped expand the films’ reach and enabled them to achieve greater financial success.

Antony praises Prithviraj

Speaking about Prithviraj, Antony said he did not travel with the team during the Russia schedule of Lucifer.

“I did not go along for the Russia shoot of Lucifer. I gave one of my cards to Prithviraj. He handled everything. The shoot was completed for very little money. I collaborate with people like that. They are also people who are passionate in that way,” Antony said.

Lucifer, written by Murali Gopy and directed by Prithviraj, received strong appreciation from audiences and critics and performed well at the box office.

Its high-budget sequel, Empuraan, became embroiled in major controversies, leading to speculation that the third instalment could be uncertain. The title L3: Azrael had earlier been confirmed as the name of the third film.
