Dominic Arun’s Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, has taken Mollywood by storm, rewriting the record books with its massive box office success. The superhero flick has become the first-ever Malayalam film to gross over ₹300 crore globally, overtaking big-budget hits featuring industry giants like Mohanlal and Mammootty.

Released in theatres on August 28, Lokah was initially seen as a dark horse. However, it quickly gained momentum, resonating with audiences across Kerala and beyond. As per Sacnilk reports, the film had earned ₹299.9 crore in its first 40 days and soon crossed the historic ₹300 crore threshold.

In doing so, Lokah dethroned Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2: Empuraan, which had held the previous record with ₹265.5 crore in global collections. Other major Malayalam blockbusters like Manjummel Boys (₹240 crore) and Thudarum (₹234.5 crore) now trail behind Lokah in the all-time list.

Following this success, a sequel — Lokah: Chapter 2 — is already in the works. Actor Tovino Thomas is expected to lead the cast as the superhero character Michael, while Dulquer Salmaan may reprise a cameo as Charlie. Both stars had brief appearances in the first film. Kalyani Priyadarshan is also likely to return in the next instalment.

With this milestone, Lokah has firmly placed itself in Indian cinema history, proving that Malayalam films can compete at a pan-Indian — and even global — level when given the right story and spectacle.
