For years, Suhasini Mulay was asked the same question that follows many successful actors throughout their careers: when would she get married? While the actor built an acclaimed body of work with films such as Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar, she continued to remain single, choosing not to enter a relationship simply to meet society's expectations.

That decision remained unchanged until she turned 60.

Today, as Lagaan completes 25 years since its release, Mulay's personal journey is drawing fresh attention, not only because she married later in life, but because she tied the knot with scientist Atul Gurtu within just 75 days of meeting him.

Speaking about her marriage in earlier interviews, Mulay explained that she never rejected the idea of companionship. Instead, she spent years waiting for someone she genuinely connected with.

"I married for the first time at 60 because I hadn't met the right person before that," she said while recalling the turning point in her life.

Her future husband was not from the film industry but from the world of science. Gurtu, a physicist associated with major international research projects, entered her life through an unexpected platform, Facebook.

Mulay had joined the social media platform after being encouraged by a colleague who suggested it could help her stay connected professionally. While browsing online, she came across Gurtu's profile and was intrigued by his work in particle physics and the Large Hadron Collider.

Curious about the subject, she sent him a message asking about the project. What began as a simple question gradually turned into regular conversations and email exchanges.

As their communication increased, Mulay sensed that Gurtu might be interested in finding a life partner, although he never directly expressed it. Unsure about taking the next step, she sought advice from a friend, who encouraged her to keep an open mind rather than dismiss the possibility outright.

Even then, she remained cautious.

When Gurtu asked for her phone number, Mulay refused initially, joking that she did not share personal details with strangers online. Determined to verify his identity, she independently checked information about him through professional sources and confirmed that everything matched the profile she had seen.

One message from Gurtu particularly stayed with her. He wrote that meaningful change in life requires effort and willingness to embrace new possibilities. The thought resonated with her.

Although they had been communicating for months, their schedules delayed an in-person meeting. They finally met shortly after Diwali. Mulay later admitted that she intentionally arrived late because she wanted to be certain the man she was meeting was the same person she had been speaking to online.

The meeting proved decisive.

Over the following weeks, the two spent considerable time talking and getting to know each other. Once they were convinced about their future together, they saw little reason to prolong the process.

They met in late November and were married on January 16—roughly 75 days later.

The news surprised even Mulay's family. When she informed her mother that she believed she had found someone special, the reaction was one of disbelief. However, after meeting Gurtu and hearing him speak, her mother became convinced that her daughter had made the right choice.

According to Mulay, what impressed her mother most was Gurtu's outlook on marriage later in life. He reportedly believed that both of them were perfectly capable of living independently, but that happiness deserved an opportunity.

Even after marrying at 60, Mulay found herself facing public scrutiny. Ironically, she says the criticism was similar to what she had encountered for remaining unmarried in her younger years.

The actor has often pointed out that public figures are frequently judged regardless of the choices they make. Yet she remains content with the path she chose, waiting until she found a relationship that felt right rather than conforming to expectations.
