The Delhi High Court on April 30 directed that the assets of late businessman Sunjay Kapur be preserved, issuing an interim injunction that prevents his wife Priya Sachdev from selling or disposing of them amid an ongoing inheritance dispute.

Court orders status quo on ₹30,000 crore estate
The court said Kapur’s estate, estimated at around ₹30,000 crore, must be protected until the legal validity of a disputed will is determined. It also ordered that bank accounts and other financial holdings remain non-operational for the time being.

The judge noted that allowing the assets to be liquidated at this stage could lead to injustice if the will is later found to be invalid.

The case centres on a conflict between Priya Sachdev and Kapur’s children, Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Kapur, from his previous marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor.

The children have alleged that the will presented by Priya Sachdev is fabricated and that key assets were deliberately omitted from the inventory submitted to the court.

Allegations of missing assets and forged will

According to the children, the disclosed asset list excludes several high-value items, including luxury watches, polo horses, artworks, and real estate holdings linked to the Kapur family.

They have argued that the omissions raise serious questions about the authenticity of the will and the completeness of disclosures.

Priya Sachdev’s legal team has rejected the allegations, calling them baseless and asserting that the will is valid. Her counsel argued that there is no evidence of coercion or lack of mental capacity, which are key grounds for challenging a will under law.

The defence has maintained that the will was properly disclosed to all concerned parties.

Court sees prima facie case, shifts burden of proof

The court observed that the children had made a sufficient initial case to justify protection of the estate. It stated that the burden now lies on Priya Sachdev to establish the authenticity of the will.

It also stressed that the assets “need to be preserved” during the course of the trial to ensure fairness.

The legal battle also involves Kapur’s mother and sister, indicating a broader family dispute over the inheritance. The case is expected to proceed to trial, where the court will examine the validity of the will and competing claims over the estate.

Sunjay Kapur passed away in London in June 2025 at the age of 53 while playing polo. Official reports later confirmed that his death was due to natural causes related to heart disease.
