A month after the sudden demise of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, his ex-wife and actress Karisma Kapoor is reportedly seeking a share in his sprawling ₹30,000 crore estate, according to fresh media reports. Though Kapoor has not made any official statement, the reported development comes amid growing disputes within the Kapur family following Sunjay's death.

Sunjay Kapur, who served as the chairman of Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar), died on June 12 2025. Since his passing, his family’s business empire has been thrust into the spotlight over claims of coercion, ownership battles, and suspicions surrounding his cause of death.

Karisma Kapoor's alleged claim on the estate

According to Dainik Jagran, Karisma Kapoor, who was married to Sunjay from 2003 until their divorce in 2016, is said to be claiming her share in his assets. However, there has been no direct confirmation from Kapoor or her legal team.

During their divorce proceedings, Kapoor had accused Sunjay and his mother of domestic violence. She had further alleged that Sunjay forced her into objectionable situations during their honeymoon. In response, Sunjay had claimed the actress had married him for financial gain.

As part of the divorce settlement, Karisma was granted full custody of their two children, Samaira and Kiaan. She also received a property in Mumbai that was previously owned by Sunjay’s father. Additionally, Sunjay created two investment bonds worth ₹14 crore each for the children, providing an annual payout of ₹10 lakh to secure their financial future.

Mother raises ownership claims and questions son’s death

According to a report by India.com, Sunjay's mother, Rani Kapur, has claimed she holds the majority stake in Sona Group and is the rightful heir to her son’s estate. She alleged that shortly after his passing, she was forced to sign legal documents while in a state of grief.

"I’ve been informed that certain people are representing themselves as being the largest shareholders of the Company since they claim to represent the interest of the family in the Company. I am fully convinced that the documents which were executed by me under coercion and duress, post the demise of my son, at a time of mental and emotional vulnerability, are being misused," Rani said in a letter addressed to shareholders of Sona Comstar.

Her legal counsel, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, also issued a statement alleging the death may not have been accurately reported as a cardiac arrest.

"For my client, as a mother, it's deeply painful to watch this being dismissed as a mere freak accident and cardiac arrest. The truth doesn't match the headlines. She would not stay silent until that truth is acknowledged," Gaggar told ANI.

Rani has reportedly requested that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Sona Comstar, which was scheduled shortly after her son’s death, be postponed. She also opposed the appointment of new directors, citing legal concerns and unresolved family matters.

The tensions within the Kapur family have escalated quickly after Sunjay’s death. Rani Kapur has not only questioned the circumstances surrounding his demise but also accused certain individuals of trying to hijack the family's business legacy. She clarified that she has not appointed any person to act on behalf of the family or the company.

The final rites of Sunjay Kapur were performed on June 19 at Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in New Delhi, attended by close friends and family. After parting ways with Karisma, Sunjay had married Priya Sachdev and had a son named Azarias with her.
