Kalyani Priyadarshan becomes first Malayalam actress with ₹200 crore blockbuster

Kalyani Priyadarshan has made history at the box office with ‘Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra’, becoming the first actress in Malayalam cinema to headline a film that has crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide.
Directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, the superhero drama has amassed Rs 202 crore in just 13 days since its release on August 28, placing it alongside the highest-grossing Malayalam films in recent years.
The film features Kalyani as Chandra, India’s first female superhero, with Naslen and Sandy in pivotal roles. The cast also includes Arun Kurian, Chandu Salimkumar, Nishanth Sagar, Raghunath Paleri, Vijayaraghavan, Nithya Shri and Sarath Sabha. Special appearances by Mammootty, Dulquer Salmaan, Tovino Thomas, Soubin Shahir, Anna Ben and others further fuelled excitement, while Mammootty lent his voice to a key character.
Kalyani reacts to the milestone
Marking the achievement, Kalyani shared a celebratory box office poster on Instagram, along with behind-the-scenes pictures. In her caption, she wrote, “Yesterday, our film reached a number that was only possible because of you, the audience. I'm beyond speechless, and truly beyond grateful for the love being showered on this film. In our industry, content has always been king, the biggest star of all - and once again, you've proved that to us. Thank you for giving us the chance to show that stories with vision will always find their place with you.”
Crediting director Dominic Arun for guiding the project, she added, “And @dominic_arun (our Dom)… thank you for giving us a vision we could believe in with our whole hearts. You're the reason we were all so excited to give everything we had - and it's safe to say none of this would have been possible without you. To the most amazing cast and crew… this win feels special for me only because I have you guys to share it with.”
A rare feat for female-led Malayalam films
Female-fronted blockbusters are still uncommon in Malayalam cinema, making Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra’s success a significant breakthrough. The film’s Rs 202 crore tally places it among the industry’s top earners, alongside Mohanlal’s ‘L2 Empuraan’ (Rs 265.5 crore) and ‘Thudarum’ (Rs 234.5 crore), as well as the 2024 hit ‘Manjummel Boys’ (Rs 240.5 crore).
Actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan, celebrating the earlier Rs 100 crore milestone, praised actor-writer Santhy Balachandran for creating a strong female lead. “We are always told that we write and approach our cinema with the male gaze. I don’t even want to say female…if there’s a lady superhero or superstar today and we represented her correctly, all credit to Santhy B,” he said.
His production house confirmed the Rs 202 crore figure on X on Wednesday.
With no major Malayalam releases scheduled in the immediate future, industry analysts expect ‘Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra’ to sustain its momentum in the weeks ahead.
