‘The Big Bang Theory’ star Johnny Galecki is returning to acting after a seven-year hiatus, choosing the theatre stage over television for his long-awaited comeback.

The actor, who became a household name as Leonard Hofstadter in the hit sitcom, has been cast as celebrated playwright Tennessee Williams in ‘Kowalski’, an upcoming production by Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago. The play, written by Gregg Ostrin and directed by Colin Hanlon, is scheduled to run from September 19 to October 25.

The announcement marks Galecki's first major acting project since stepping away from Hollywood following the conclusion of ‘The Big Bang Theory’. During his time away from the spotlight, he largely focused on family life and remained absent from film and television.

Johnny Galecki returns to the stage

Rather than making a comeback through another television series or film, Galecki has opted for live theatre, taking on one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century.

‘Kowalski’ is set in Provincetown in 1947 and imagines the first meeting between Tennessee Williams and Hollywood star Marlon Brando. According to Variety, the production explores how their encounter helped shape Williams' acclaimed play ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, which premiered in 1951.

Explaining what drew him back to acting, Galecki said the project arrived at the right moment in his life.

"The planets aligned. Gregg's writing, Colin's vision, and the feeling that after seven years of quietly observing life, I finally had something new to bring back to the work."

"Add to that the privilege of portraying one of my artistic heroes, and it became impossible to say no," he said.

Playwright Gregg Ostrin said the production explores the impact of creative collaborations.

"At its heart, 'Kowalski' is about the collision of extraordinary talents and the lasting impact those encounters can have on art and culture."

A career beyond Leonard Hofstadter

Although Galecki is best known worldwide for portraying physicist Leonard Hofstadter, his acting career began long before ‘The Big Bang Theory’.

He appeared in the sitcom ‘Roseanne’ as David Healy and later reprised the role in ‘The Conners’. His film credits include National Lampoon's ‘Christmas Vacation’, ‘Prancer’, ‘Suicide Kings’, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’, ‘Vanilla Sky’, ‘Hancock’, ‘In Time’ and ‘Rings’.

However, it was ‘The Big Bang Theory’ that transformed Galecki into an international television star. His performance as Leonard earned him an Emmy Award nomination and made him one of the defining faces of modern sitcom television.

Alongside characters including Sheldon Cooper, Penny, Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali, Leonard became part of one of television's most successful ensemble casts. Years after the series concluded, clips, catchphrases and memes from the sitcom continue to find new audiences online.

Why Johnny Galecki stepped away from Hollywood

Following the end of ‘The Big Bang Theory’, Galecki made only a handful of acting appearances, including returning as David in The Conners. His last major film role came in 2019.

Soon afterwards, he chose to leave California after nearly three decades, relocating to Tennessee and embracing a quieter lifestyle away from the entertainment industry.

During his years away from acting, Galecki kept a low public profile, focusing on raising his two children and spending time with his family. He also married Morgan during his hiatus.

Fans briefly saw Galecki reunite with former ‘The Big Bang Theory’ co-star Kaley Cuoco in a mobile game advertisement in 2025, fuelling speculation that he could eventually return to acting.

With Kowalski, those hopes have now become reality, as Galecki prepares to make his first major on-stage appearance in seven years, returning to the profession that made him one of television's most recognisable actors.
