‘Cropped for meme...I’ll say it daily’: Janhvi Kapoor torches trolls over viral ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ video | WATCH

Mumbai: After facing online trolling for chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” at a Janmashtami Dahi Handi event, actress Janhvi Kapoor has responded with grace and clarity. Taking to her Instagram Stories, she shared the full, unedited video of the moment and addressed the criticism directly.
"Unke bolne ke baad nahi bolti toh problem, aur bolo toh bhi video ko kaat ke meme material. Waise sirf Janmashtami ke din nahi, roz bolungi Bharat mata ki Jaii (If I hadn’t repeated it after he said it, there would’ve been a problem. And if I say it, then the video is cropped and turned into meme material. Anyway, not just on Janmashtami — I’ll say ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ every single day,” Janhvi wrote.
What actually happened?
The controversy began when a short, cropped clip went viral on social media. In the video, Janhvi Kapoor is seen shouting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” before breaking the handi, as part of the Dahi Handi celebrations, a traditional event held during Krishna Janmashtami.
Some users criticised her for using the patriotic slogan instead of the traditional chant “Govinda Ala Re”, questioning her knowledge of the festival. Comments ranged from sarcastic jabs to harsh trolling:
A user wrote, “Bharat Mata Ki Jai on Krishna Janmashtami?”. Another trolled her, saying, “She hasn’t moved on from Independence Day, which was just a day ago.”
An Instagram user commented, “Dahi Handi ka Bharat Mata se kya lena dena? (What is the connection of Bharat Mata and Dahi Handi?)”.
The full video reveals the context
In her Instagram story, Janhvi posted the complete video, which reveals that the slogan was not spontaneous. In fact, the local MLA who invited her to the event is seen first chanting “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and then asking Janhvi to repeat it before breaking the handi, which she did, following his request.
The context, omitted from the viral clip, clarifies that Janhvi was simply being respectful of the host’s request and the festive spirit of the occasion.
On the work front, Janhvi Kapoor is currently busy promoting her upcoming film ‘Param Sundari’, in which she stars alongside Sidharth Malhotra. The film is set to release on August 29, 2025.
