Is Dhanush entering politics? Latest speech at blood donation camp sparks speculation

Actor-director Dhanush has reignited speculation about a possible political entry after calling on his fan clubs to transform their collective strength into a force for public welfare. His remarks at a blood donation camp organised by his fans on Sunday quickly gained traction online, with many drawing parallels to the path taken by actor-turned-politician Vijay.

Although Dhanush made no direct reference to politics, his emphasis on community service and organised grassroots work prompted widespread discussion across social media. The speech also comes amid weeks of rumours surrounding his political ambitions, fuelled by reports of his fan club unveiling a flag associated with the actor.

Dhanush calls for welfare work

Addressing supporters at the event, Dhanush urged them to focus on helping those around them rather than limiting their activities to film-related celebrations.

"So many people are gathered in one place. There’s a great power in this kind of unity. We need to give that unity a purpose. Beyond just audio launches and meetups, we need to engage in even more welfare activities. Understand the needs of the people in your area, the families living around you and help them in whatever way possible. Do whatever help you can for them. I need to feel even prouder of you. I believe you will do it."

The speech immediately sparked fresh political speculation, with fans interpreting his call for organised welfare initiatives as a possible indication that he could eventually enter public life. An user on X wrote, “Dhanush is preparing for political entry? Traditional big political parties will be like DMK, ADMK, BJP how many of them going to come Anyhow welcome to politics.”

Another user wrote, “DHANUSH Indirectly hints his politics entry.”

While Dhanush stopped short of confirming any such plans, many observers compared the approach to Vijay's early emphasis on welfare activities through his fan associations before formally launching his political career.

Earlier this month, Dhanush's father, filmmaker Kasthuri Raja, was asked about reports of his son's possible political ambitions. He declined to comment, saying, "I really don't know. You should ask him this question."

Response to National Awards debate

During the same event, Dhanush also addressed the debate surrounding his recognition at the 72nd National Film Awards.

The actor acknowledged that there were "definitely better" Tamil films released in 2024 than his directorial ‘Raayan’. However, he urged audiences and critics to view the awards as a moment of pride for Tamil cinema, highlighting that a Tamil actor had secured two National Awards in the same year.

Dhanush received a Special Mention for his performance in ‘Captain Miller’, while ‘Raayan’ won the National Award for Best Tamil Film.

Busy slate of upcoming films

Even as political speculation continues, Dhanush remains occupied with an extensive line-up of projects.

His next release is ‘Om’ (also referred to as D55), directed by Rajkumar Periasamy and co-starring Mammootty, Sreeleela and Sai Pallavi. He is also working on ‘D56’ with ‘Lubber Pandhu’ director Thamizharasan Pachamuthu and is set to reunite with filmmaker Mari Selvaraj after ‘Karnan’ for another project featuring music by AR Rahman.

The actor will also collaborate once again with director Vetri Maaran on ‘Thamizh Murugan’, with writer Arivumathi attached to the project. In addition, reports have linked him to potential collaborations with directors PS Mithran and Siva, although those projects have yet to be officially confirmed.

Dhanush also has biopics on composer Ilaiyaraaja and former President APJ Abdul Kalam in development, though updates on both productions remain limited.
