The world is eagerly awaiting the much-anticipated collaboration between Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam, reuniting after over three decades. Their film Thug Life is set to hit theatres worldwide on June 5.

Apart from Kamal Haasan, the film features an ensemble cast including Trisha, Simbu, and Joju George.

In an amusing conversation with Anupama Chopra for The Hollywood Reporter India, Mani Ratnam—the maverick director of the film—shared insights into his thought process and execution, offering a glimpse into how he approaches his craft.

In the delightful interview, when the veteran director was asked how he works with actors, he deftly replied that he lets the good ones express themselves and see what they can bring to the table. He prefers a natural flow rather than making everything overly concise or 'grammatically' perfect.

"However, there are some actors I have promised that I will throw out of the fourth floor if I don't get exactly what I want from them," quipped Mani, revealing the lighter side of his personality.

Speaking at length about various facets of his illustrious journey, Mani Ratnam discussed his equation with Kamal Haasan, shared deeper reflections on life beyond cinema, addressed the rejections he’s faced, his process of selecting actors, the crucial role of cinematographers in his films, and more—a plethora of insights that are sure to delight cinephiles.

Expectations are sky-high as Thug Life approaches its release date, with audiences hoping for yet another classic from the Mani Ratnam–Kamal Haasan duo.
