Chennai: Choreographer Shweta Warrier has sparked a social media sensation by blending Mohiniyattam, a traditional classical dance from Kerala, with a modern rap track in a performance that’s being hailed as “treat.”
In a YouTube video released on July 11, Warrier, joined by eight dancers, choreographed a performance using the Chenda version of “Run It Up” by Hanumankind. The piece mixes the fluid, expressive movements of Mohiniyattam with elements of contemporary freestyle dance.
“After watching Hanumankind’s Run It Up, I felt inspired to reimagine this form, to see what it could become through a different lens,” Warrier explained in the video’s description. The dancers’ pristine Mohiniyattam attire and a scenic backdrop enhanced the performance's visual appeal.
On Instagram, the dance clips have already accumulated over 13 million views and millions of likes. Fans and influencers are applauding the innovative concept.
Acclaimed choreographer, Terence Lewis commented, "Such a treat for the eyes, Shweta n all the girls featured in this video! This fusion is just what we need.” Another dance veteran, Remo D’Souza, also praised the performance. Hanumankind himself reacted positively, “This is fireee.” Film stars Saniya Iyappan and Priyamani joined in showering admiration.
Online audiences have responded with enthusiastic comments, calling the fusion “refreshing,” “innovative,” and “powerful.”
