The re-edited version of the controversial Malayalam film L2:Empuraan will be the version released on OTT platforms, the film's editor Akhilesh Mohan confirmed.

Speaking to a YouTube channel, Mohan stated that the version approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) will be the definitive version going forward. The remark comes amid ongoing debates over whether the makers would retain the original version that was released in theatres on March 25. However, with this confirmation, the audience will not get to see the uncut version.

“I knew Prithviraj’s methods from working with him on Lucifer. Once I heard the story, I understood how the edit needed to be approached,” Akhilesh said, adding that despite the film’s release, editing work such as song cuts and promotional content is ongoing for the OTT rollout.

Mohan explained that once negative feedback emerged following the theatrical release, the team made quick decisions to implement changes in order to preserve the film’s overall reception. He noted that although scenes were removed, the public feedback has been reassuring, with viewers not noticing any disruption in flow or narrative coherence.

Akhilesh further explained that the editor’s task is to act swiftly and professionally when such changes are needed: “We had to do it. The decision to make cuts was taken for a good reason. Movie needs to go on. People who saw the film in theatres didn’t even realise what was removed, which is gratifying to hear.”

He added that he was instructed to deliver the revised version immediately to avoid further disruption or damage to the film’s perception. The changes, made in response to concerns about sensitive content, included the removal of scenes and muting of certain dialogues, in addition to changes in credits and character names.

While the exact date and platform for the OTT release have not been officially announced, industry sources suggest that the film will be made available on JioHotstar around May 23, 2025, following an eight-week theatrical window.

Mohan reiterated that the version currently playing in theatres is the one approved by the CBFC and will remain the standard version available across all platforms.
