From Manipur to London: ‘Boong’ movie backed by Farhan Akhtar earns Prestigious BAFTA 2026 award

London: A landmark moment for Indian cinema and the Northeast, the Manipuri-language film 'Boong' won the Best Children’s & Family Film award at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA 2026). Backed by producer Farhan Akhtar, the film triumphed over global contenders including 'Zootropolis 2', 'Arco and Lilo' & 'Stitch'.
Produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, 'Boong' received the award at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Director Lakshmipriya Devi and producers Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, and Alan McAlex accepted the prestigious honour on behalf of the team.
The film tells a deeply moving story set in Manipur, exploring the social and political tensions of the region. The title 'Boong' translates to “little boy” in Manipuri. The narrative centres on Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen, a young boy who believes that reuniting his estranged father with his family would be the greatest gift for his mother, Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam. With the support of his best friend Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum, Boong embarks on a journey to the border town of Moreh, even crossing into Myanmar, in search of his father.
The makers explain that 'Boong' revolves around a little boy determined to surprise his mother with a meaningful gift. His search for his absentee father challenges his world but leads to an unexpected resolution.
The film premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and was subsequently screened at the Warsaw International Film Festival, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, International Film Festival of India, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, prior to its theatrical release in September 2025.
Farhan Akhtar, reflecting on his decision to support the project, noted his long association with director Lakshmipriya Devi and the film’s emotional resonance. He highlighted the importance of representing a region of India rarely showcased in cinema, calling the story “heartwarming” and a project worth backing. Akhtar attended the ceremony with his wife, Shibani Dandekar, sharing the celebratory moment with the filmmakers.
The BAFTA win represents a milestone for regional Indian cinema, underscoring the growing recognition of stories from Northeast India on the global stage.
