Audience accepts feudal characters: Shaji Kailas cites recent Mohanlal movie as example

In a recent interview with The Cue Studio, renowned filmmaker Shaji Kailas, known for creating blockbuster mass films, responded to recurring criticism regarding the feudal characters often portrayed in his movies. Kailas is credited with directing several major hits, including Aaraam Thampuran, Narasimham, and Valliettan. 

A common criticism that often arises regarding his films is the portrayal of protagonists as feudal, dominant characters. In popular films like Narasimham, Aaraam Thampuran, and Valliettan, the lead characters are depicted as strong figures who dominate their surroundings and control people. Addressing this criticism, Shaji Kailas remarked that such characters are consistently liked by audiences and that such films will always find acceptance.

Kailas further argued that the success of films with feudal protagonists is timeless, citing the success of the recent blockbuster Lucifer as a prime example. According to Kailas, Mohanlal's character in Lucifer is a powerful figure who controls a region, with people around him offering unwavering support. He added that this type of character, which depicts power and control, connects easily with audiences.

"When telling a story and placing characters in different power positions, it makes it easier to connect with the audience, hence making such films become massive successes," Kailas explained. However, he acknowledged that while some critics may disapprove of these portrayals, he chooses not to be swayed by such criticism.

Shaji Kailas emphasized that the appeal of strong, feudal-like protagonists remains as strong as ever. "Audiences have always enjoyed stories with feudal characters, and I firmly believe that this taste still exists."

Despite the criticisms, Kailas made it clear that he remains unfazed, stating, "Some people criticize these types of characters, claiming it's wrong to place the protagonist above everyone else. However, I don’t pay attention to such criticism. I prefer to move forward."

In his conversation with The Cue Studio, Kailas reiterated that such stories, where the lead character is in a position of power, will always have a place in cinema.

Shaji Kailas had recently directed a horror-thriller film called Hunt, starring Bhavana, Renji Panicker, and Chandhunadh in lead roles. The film was written by Nikhil Anand and was released in theaters worldwide in August.
