AMMA polls: Historic contest ahead as women eye key leadership roles

Kochi: The Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) is set to witness a landmark electoral battle on Friday, as two prominent women in the Malayalam film industry contest for the organisation’s top leadership posts.

The elections, to be held at a hotel in Kochi, have become one of the most closely watched and hotly contested in AMMA’s history, with actor Shwetha Menon facing off against actor-turned-politician Devan for the role of president.

Should Menon win, she will become AMMA’s first-ever woman president, marking a huge milestone for gender representation within one of South India’s most powerful film industry bodies.

General Secretary race: Another potential first for women

In a parallel contest, actor Kuku Parameswaran is challenging veteran actor Raveendran for the role of general secretary – another influential post that, if won by Parameswaran, would also see a woman holding the position for the first time.

The atmosphere leading up to the election has been charged, with observers calling the contest too close to call. “There’s no official panel this time. Each candidate is fighting their own battle. The presidential and secretary contests are both 50-50, and while 500 members are eligible to vote, turnout may only reach about 50 per cent,” said an AMMA member who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Pre-poll tensions and media gag order

Tensions within AMMA escalated last week, following a public dispute between actresses Ponnamma Babu and Mala Parvathy over the organisation’s financial matters. The row prompted AMMA’s ad-hoc committee to issue a media gag order, instructing members to refrain from discussing internal issues until after the election.

The verbal spat reportedly caused concern among industry stalwarts, including Mohanlal and Mammootty, who are known to exert significant influence within AMMA.

Election outcome carries heavy responsibility

Beyond the electoral intrigue, the incoming leadership will be tasked with navigating ongoing challenges, including unresolved matters with the Income Tax Department, as well as the broader demand for transparency and reform in AMMA’s functioning.

“Whosoever wins, the new committee has a tough road ahead,” said a member, underscoring the weight of responsibility awaiting the new office bearers.
