Rekha

Rekha—the very name evokes an image of eternal, sharp beauty. For 55 years, her face has been imprinted in the hearts of the Indian people. Her life, much like her presence on screen, has been dramatic, filled with love, heartbreak and an unwavering sense of mystery. Discussions about her romances, marriage, and ageless allure have never ceased. Yet, behind the glamour lies a tale of profound sorrow, woven with the weight of an aching childhood.

Rekha was born to Tamil cinema’s legendary romantic hero Gemini Ganesan. While M G Ramachandran was ruling the silver screen with his action-packed films and Sivaji Ganesan with his intense dramas, Gemini Ganesan reigned as the king of romance. But his real-life love affairs were far more dramatic than any film. His name was often linked to his co-stars, and many of these whispers were not just rumours—they were true. He was a lover at heart, a man who worshipped beauty but shied away from responsibilities.

His first wife was Alamelu, but soon he became involved with Telugu actress Pushpavalli, who had separated from her first husband. Their relationship resulted in two daughters—Rekha and Radha. However, Gemini Ganesan initially refused to acknowledge paternity. Even as he shared a life with Pushpavalli, he developed a romantic relationship with the celebrated actress Savitri, known as Mahanati in Telugu cinema. When he married Savitri, he distanced himself completely from Pushpavalli and their daughters.

Rekha’s childhood passed without the shadow of her father.

Savitri’s marriage with Ganesan, too, was filled with turmoil. At the time, Hindu men were legally allowed to have multiple wives, and Savitri had married him against her family’s wishes. But Gemini Ganesan had merely exploited the emotions of two women, leaving both to suffer.

Pushpavalli struggled immensely to raise her two daughters alone. She moved from one film set to another, taking up even the smallest roles, desperate to provide for her children. All the while, Gemini Ganesan refused to even visit them, let alone acknowledge them as his own. He remained indifferent to their existence.

Due to extreme financial hardship, Pushpavalli was forced to push Rekha into acting. As a young girl, Rekha had no choice but to live a life she never wanted—one that stole away her childhood and dreams. It was much later that she transformed into the megastar the world knows today. Even then, her father remained absent from her life.

In a rare, deeply emotional interview with Simi Garewal, Rekha recalled her fatherless childhood:

"I have never spoken to him. He left my mother when I was just a child. I don't even remember him being around. Even though his other children and I studied in the same school, I never saw him as my father."

When asked if she ever waited for him at school, she responded:

"No, he would drop his kids off and leave immediately. I never got the chance to meet him. You cannot miss something you’ve never had. I didn’t even know what the word ‘father’ meant."

In 2005, Gemini Ganesan passed away. Rekha did not attend his funeral. When asked whether she grieved his death, she simply said:
"In my imagination, he was always with me. And imagination is far more beautiful than reality."
