National Film Awards today: Top contenders, live streaming and what to expect

New Delhi: The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards will be announced on Friday evening, with films and performances from across India competing for the country's highest recognition in cinema. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is scheduled to reveal the winners at 5.30 pm from the National Media Centre in New Delhi, with the announcement streamed live on PIB India's YouTube channel.
The awards recognise films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) between January 1 and December 31, 2024. An 11-member jury led by filmmaker Jayaraj evaluated entries from across languages before submitting its recommendations to the ministry.
The announcement comes about two weeks later than initially expected. The delay followed the jury's ongoing deliberations and scheduling commitments of some members.
Malayalam films among strongest contenders
Malayalam cinema heads into this year's awards with considerable expectations after a year marked by both critical acclaim and commercial success. Films including Bramayugam, Manjummel Boys and Kishkindha Kaandam have featured prominently in discussions around the awards.
Much of the attention is centred on the acting categories. Mammootty's performance in Bramayugam has drawn widespread appreciation, while Prithviraj Sukumaran's physically demanding role in Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life is also regarded as a strong contender.
The interest is not limited to Malayalam cinema. Tamil films Maharaja, Meiyazhagan and Amaran, Telugu releases Kalki 2898 AD, Lucky Baskhar and Devara: Part 1, and Hindi films Article 370, Srikanth and Chandu Champion are also among the titles expected to feature prominently.
In the Best Actress race, Sai Pallavi's performance in Amaran has generated significant attention alongside acclaimed performances by Yami Gautam (Article 370), Shraddha Kapoor (Stree 2), Kani Kusruti (All We Imagine As Light and Girls Will Be Girls) and Alia Bhatt (Jigra).
South Indian cinema enters with momentum
South Indian cinema has reasons to be optimistic beyond individual performances. Several regional films combined box office success with strong critical reception during the eligibility period.
Telugu blockbuster Kalki 2898 AD is expected to be in contention in technical categories, particularly visual effects. Amaran has earned recognition for its performances and storytelling, while Devara: Part 1 has attracted attention for its music. Malayalam successes such as Manjummel Boys and Bramayugam further strengthen the region's prospects across multiple categories.
The National Film Awards honour excellence in feature and non-feature films, writing on cinema, acting, direction, screenplay, music, cinematography, editing and other technical fields. With acclaimed films emerging from several languages, the final list of winners is expected to reflect another competitive year for Indian cinema.
