'Vadakkan' releases 'Mayyath Rap' as it gears up for March release

The electrifying track 'Mayyath Rap' from the supernatural horror thriller 'Vadakkan' has been released, adding to the anticipation surrounding the film, which has already gained international acclaim. Performed by MC Couper and Greeshma—who makes both her acting and singing debut in the film—the retro-vibe hip-hop number offers a playful, high-energy perspective from the youth in the story. The lyrics evoke intrigue, referencing regional supernatural entities such as Madan, Marutha, Kalan, Yakshi, and Chathan.

Directed by Mumbai-based Malayali filmmaker Sajeed A, 'Vadakkan' stars South Indian actors Kishore and Shruthy Menon in lead roles. The film recently made waves with its unique audio trailer, following the viral success of the song 'Kettingo Ninga Kettingo Ninga Vellidivettum Kodithottam....' The trailer hints at a haunting narrative set in a mysterious location plagued by paranormal occurrences. The film is set to hit theatres on 7 March.

Rooted in the rich folklore of North Malabar, 'Vadakkan' features a screenplay and dialogues by Unni R., with music composed by Bijibal. Adding to its diverse musical landscape, globally renowned folk singer Zebunnisa Bangash has lent her voice to a track written by acclaimed Bollywood lyricist Shellee.

International recognition and awards

'Vadakkan' made a mark on the global stage, premiering at several prestigious film festivals. It was officially screened at the 78th Festival Internazionale Del Cinema Di Salerno and had an exclusive invite-only market screening at the Cannes Film Festival's Marché du Film 2024. The film was recognised in the Fantastic Pavilion category, spotlighting standout horror and fantasy films. Among the top seven films in this segment, 'Vadakkan' drew attention at a grand gala attended by Hollywood and Bollywood stars, as well as international genre enthusiasts.

Further solidifying its place in the supernatural horror genre, 'Vadakkan' won Best Supernatural Film at the renowned Fright Night Festival in the United States.

Technical brilliance and theatrical release

The film boasts a stellar technical team, featuring Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty and Japanese cinematographer Keiko Nakahara. Its VFX, executed by leading CGI teams from India and abroad, enhances the eerie and otherworldly atmosphere.

Initially presented in Malayalam, the film will also be released in Kannada. Alongside lead actors Kishore and Shruthy Menon, the film features a strong ensemble cast, including Merin Philip, Kalesh Ramanand, Sirajudheen Nazar, Maala Parvathi, Gargi Ananthan, Meenakshi Unnikrishnan, Aryan Kathuria, Ravi Venkatraman, and Greeshma Alex.
