Singer Sharda Sinha on ventilator; PM Modi in 'direct contact with the treating doctors'

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted the family of acclaimed folk singer Sharda Sinha to inquire about her health and offer assistance for her ongoing treatment, according to her family.

Sinha, 72, known for her soulful folk renditions during the Chhath festival, is critically ill and currently receiving treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. She has been battling multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, since 2018, and her condition worsened on Monday, leading doctors to place her on a ventilator.

An official statement from AIIMS reports that Sinha is “hemodynamically stable but under constant monitoring.”

Anshuman Sinha, her son, has been updating fans on her condition through social media and news outlets. Speaking with ANI, Anshuman confirmed that Prime Minister Modi had reached out and assured him of all necessary support for his mother’s treatment.

The singer's health crisis has raised concern across the country, with fans and well-wishers expressing their support.

Sinha, a cultural icon of Bihar, is celebrated for her contributions to folk music, particularly her Chhath geet, which has become emblematic of the festival. Her career began in the 1970s, and she rose to national recognition for her work in Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Hindi folk music. Her song "Babool" from the film 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' earned her widespread fame and acclaim.

In recognition of her contributions to Indian arts, Sinha was honored with the Padma Bhushan, the nation’s third-highest civilian award, in 2018. She also received a National Film Award, solidifying her legacy as a leading voice in regional music and culture. (ANI)
