'Appa becoming the CM is a historic revolution… My mom is like a spy': Jason Sanjay on Vijay

Jason Sanjay has largely remained out of the public eye despite growing up as the son of actor-turned-politician Vijay. But as he prepares for the release of his directorial debut, 'Sigma', the filmmaker is opening up about family, responsibility and the lessons he has inherited from one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars.

In a candid interview ahead of the film's release, Jason spoke about how Vijay's rise to the office of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has transformed life for their family. He also shared the advice his father gave him before entering the film industry, recalled humorous moments involving his mother Sangeetha and reflected on memories from his childhood on film sets. 

Extra level of responsibility

Speaking to Behindwoods, Jason described Vijay's political journey as a defining moment for the family and said it has brought a greater sense of duty.

"Seeing my Appa become the Chief Minister is a historic revolution. It is an extra level of responsibility for me, my sister, and everyone in our family. It is the legacy that we have to carry forward and safeguard," he said.

He explained that while his father's achievement is a source of pride, it also comes with expectations for the family to uphold the values associated with that legacy.

Jason also revealed that Vijay encouraged him to establish himself independently rather than relying on his father's fame.

"My Appa told me that I need to build my own identity and name. He asked me to reach out if I ever needed any help, but he wanted me to create my own path," he shared.

A mother's watchful eye

While discussing his family, Jason also spoke affectionately about his mother, Sangeetha, joking that she always seemed to know what he was up to.

"My mom is like a spy. Whenever I try to do something secretly or hang out without telling anyone, I always get caught."

He went on to recount an incident from his younger days that left his family worried.

"One night I took the car without informing anyone and came back only the next morning. My phone was switched off, and my family was about to file a missing complaint. When I returned home, I really got into trouble."

Childhood memories with Vijay

Jason also looked back on his brief appearance alongside Vijay in the song 'Naan Adicha Thaangamatta' from the film 'Vettaikaaran', admitting he remembers little about how he ended up on screen.

"I don't even remember how I ended up in that song. I just wore the costume, and when they said action, I ran and hugged my Appa. I was only around eight or nine years old then. Whenever I direct now, those shooting memories come back to me," he said.

When asked whether he had inherited his father's dancing skills, Jason was quick to play down any comparisons.

"Dance comes only with practice. I am not a natural dancer. Please don't compare me with my father."

Jason’s directorial debut

Jason is set to make his filmmaking debut with 'Sigma', a project that has generated considerable interest as it marks the first feature directed by Vijay's son. Besides directing the film, he is also expected to make a special appearance in one of its songs.
