Pokémon fans are adding this Japanese airport to their travel bucket list; here’s why

For Pokémon fans, Japan has always been a dream destination. From Pokémon cafés and themed trains to special aircraft liveries operated by Japanese airlines, the country has long embraced the beloved Pokémon in creative ways. But this summer, Japan is taking that love story to an entirely new level.

Starting July 7, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport will officially transform into the world’s first Pokémon-themed airport and this is not just a few posters or souvenirs placed around a terminal.

The airport is preparing for a complete Pokémon makeover that promises to turn an ordinary domestic airport into a joyful, feel-good travel experience filled with colour, nostalgia, and hope.

The special transformation will continue until September 30, 2029.

A Pokémon adventure begins

The moment passengers arrive at the airport; they will step into what feels like a real-life Pokémon world.

One of the biggest highlights is the airport’s giant two-storey atrium, where a massive Pikachu balloon riding on top of an airplane will float above visitors. Around it, colourful Pokémon characters will decorate the walls, ceilings, pillars, staircases, and passenger areas throughout the terminal.

In total, 111 flying-type Pokémon characters will appear across the airport, encouraging visitors to “catch them all” as they move through the building.

The arrival lobby will feature a bright mural called “A Bright Future,” inspired by the natural beauty of the Noto region and designed to spread positivity and encouragement. Another original artwork titled “Sky of Hope” will showcase Pokémon flying across glowing skies filled with rainbows and light, symbolising freedom, new journeys, and optimism.

Even airport signs, waiting areas, and viewing decks are being redesigned with Pokémon-inspired themes, making the airport experience fun not just for children, but for adults who grew up watching the franchise.

More than tourism, a symbol of recovery and hope

While the airport makeover may look playful on the surface, the story behind it is deeply emotional.

The project is part of broader efforts to revive the Noto Peninsula region after the devastating 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the area in 2024. The disaster damaged infrastructure, affected local communities, and disrupted tourism across Ishikawa Prefecture.

The Pokémon-themed transformation is being developed in partnership with the Pokémon With You Foundation and the Ishikawa Prefectural Government as a way to bring smiles back to children and families impacted by the disaster.

Airport officials say the imagery of Pokémon flying through radiant skies represents hope, recovery, and the excitement of beginning a new journey after difficult times.

In many ways, the airport is becoming more than a transportation hub, it is becoming a symbol of healing for the region.

Pokémon pancakes, souvenirs and special buses

The fun does not stop with the decorations.

Passengers visiting the airport will also be able to enjoy Pokémon-themed food, drinks, shopping, and sightseeing experiences. At Restaurant Annon on the airport’s third floor, travellers can order special Pokémon pancakes, themed beverages, and collectible placemats designed exclusively for the airport.

Meanwhile, the Serendipity gift shop will sell limited-edition airport-exclusive Pokémon merchandise including t-shirts, keychains, luggage tags, suitcase belts, collectible artwork and airport logo souvenirs.

The “Sky of Hope” artwork and airport branding will also appear on specially wrapped sightseeing buses operating across the Noto Peninsula beginning mid-July 2026.

These buses will connect travellers from Kanazawa Station to the airport and nearby cities including Wajima, while also stopping at Pokémon-themed attractions across the region.

A small airport with global attraction

Interestingly, Noto Satoyama Airport is relatively small. Located in Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan, the airport mainly operates domestic flights connecting the region to Tokyo Haneda Airport. Currently, All Nippon Airways (ANA) operates two daily flights between Tokyo and Noto using Airbus A320neo and A321 aircraft.

But despite its modest size, the airport is now preparing to become one of Japan’s most unique travel attractions. The Pokémon branding is also expected to give a major boost to regional tourism, attracting both domestic and international visitors eager to experience the world’s first Pokémon airport.

Pokémon travel universe

Japan has increasingly blended travel and pop culture in recent years. From Pokémon-themed trains and aircraft to dedicated hotel rooms and now even permanent Pokémon parks, the franchise has become deeply connected to the country’s tourism industry.

Earlier this year, Japan also opened PokéPark Kanto, Pokémon’s first permanent theme park, while several hotels across Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto now offer fully themed Pokémon rooms for families and tourists.

The new airport project takes that idea even further by transforming an entire travel gateway into an immersive themed experience.

And for passengers flying into the region from Tokyo, the journey itself may soon feel less like a regular domestic flight and more like the beginning of a cheerful animated adventure.

For aviation lovers, tourists, families, and lifelong Pokémon fans alike, Japan’s newest airport transformation may become one of the happiest and most unique travel experiences in the world.
