Carrying extra luggage on Indian Railways? Here's the new rule every passenger should know

Packing a little extra for your train journey no longer has to mean standing in long queues at the parcel office. Indian Railways has introduced a new online excess luggage booking facility, allowing eligible passengers to declare and pay for extra baggage digitally before their journey.

Launched on July 31, 2026, the service is designed to simplify the process by integrating luggage booking with the ticketing system.

The facility is available only for passengers with confirmed reserved tickets travelling in AC First Class, AC 2-Tier, First Class, Sleeper Class and Second Class. However, passengers travelling in AC 3-Tier, AC 3 Economy and AC Chair Car are not eligible because the maximum luggage permitted in these classes is already the same as the free luggage allowance.

Under the updated rules, passengers can carry luggage free of charge up to the prescribed limit for their class. The free allowance is 70 kg in AC First Class, 50 kg in First Class and AC 2-Tier, 40 kg in Sleeper Class, 35 kg in Second Class, and 40 kg in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car.

If your baggage exceeds the free limit but remains within the maximum permissible limit, you can pay excess luggage charges online. The minimum charge is ₹30, calculated in 10 kg slabs, with a minimum chargeable distance of 50 km.

Passengers must also follow the prescribed size limits. Standard trunks, suitcases and boxes measuring up to 100 cm × 60 cm × 25 cm are generally allowed, while passengers in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car must stick to a smaller size limit of 55 cm × 45 cm × 22.5 cm.

Booking the service is straightforward. Passengers can use the Indian Railways Parcel Portal or access the option through IRCTC while booking or managing their ticket. After entering journey and luggage details, the portal displays applicable charges, luggage limits, restricted items and penalty rules.

Once the application is submitted, passengers need to print the e-forwarding note, present their luggage at the originating station's parcel office for final weighing, complete the payment and collect the Railway Receipt (RR).

The RR remains an important document, as it is required to claim the luggage at the destination. Travellers can also track their baggage in real time through the Track & Trace service and will receive an SMS notification once it reaches the destination station, making the entire process more transparent than before.
