Over a hundred years after the Titanic sank, a remarkable piece of the past is set to go under the hammer. A life jacket worn by a survivor of the RMS Titanic sinking is being auctioned this weekend, offering collectors what experts describe as a rare and meaningful opportunity to own a part of history.

The life jacket is expected to sell for between £250,000 (339,000 dollars) and £350,000 (474,000 dollars). According to auction house Henry Aldridge and Son, it is the only known example worn by a Titanic survivor to ever be offered for sale.

The garment belonged to Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first class passenger aboard the ill-fated liner, which sank 114 years ago this week.

The tragic voyage of the Titanic

When the RMS Titanic departed on April 10, 1912, it was the largest passenger ship in operation and widely believed to be unsinkable. Just four days into its maiden journey, disaster struck when the vessel collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic at 11:40 pm on April 14.

The ship went down in under three hours. With insufficient lifeboats for the approximately 2,220 people on board, only around 700 survived, turning the voyage into a global tragedy.

Details of the life jacket

The beige vest is designed with 12 cork-filled canvas pockets, along with shoulder supports and side straps, as described in the auction listing. Its design reflects the safety measures of the time, offering a glimpse into the conditions faced by passengers during the disaster.

This item forms part of a larger sale featuring Titanic and White Star Line memorabilia, which will be held by Henry Aldridge and Son over the weekend.

Survivor’s story

Francatelli, who worked as secretary to fashion designer Lucy Duff Gordon, was travelling to Chicago alongside her employer and her husband, Cosmo Duff Gordon. All three managed to survive after securing a place in lifeboat number one.

The life jacket itself carries further historical significance. It is signed by Francatelli and others who were rescued in the same lifeboat.

‘Once in a generation’ opportunity

Andrew Aldridge, managing director of the auction house, described the life jacket as one of the most remarkable artefacts linked to the Titanic ever to be offered publicly.

“Quite simply this lifejacket presents a once in a generation opportunity for collectors, it’s the only example to ever be offered for auction from a Titanic survivor,” he said.

He added that although the Titanic sank 114 years ago, each person on board had a story. “In essence we have over 2,200 chapters and today we present those stories through these pieces of memorabilia. The lifejacket is without doubt one of the most iconic items from the Titanic ever to be offered for auction,” he said.

According to Aldridge, the life jacket is being sold by a private owner who has decided to pass it on to another collector.

The artefact has previously been displayed at Titanic Belfast, located at the site where the ship was built, as well as at the world’s largest Titanic museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
